Samsung handsets are quite expensive in the Hong Kong market. This year, the strategy has been changed. X100 (X108) and the brand new X450 (X458) designed for the lower price market. Samsung even uses the clamshell form factor, which originally is for high-end model, to produce X450 (X458). The new phone becomes the new standard of entry level mobile phone by incorporating 40 polyphonic ring tones, a 65k color screen and many multimedia features.
As remembered, the first Samsung color display GSM phone should be the T100 (T108). At that time, the configuration is much better than Ericsson T68 (first color display GSM phone), with 4096 colors display and 16 chords polyphonic ring tones. Now the X450 (X458) is the continuous model from T100 (T108).
The features of the new X450 (X458) are upgraded completely. The screen is increased to 65000 colors with 128 x 160 higher resolution pixels (but uses lower quality USB display). The upgrades also includes 40 chords polyphonic ring tones instead of 16 ones; 1000 records phonebook; MMS sending and receiving; J2ME games and GSM triband capacity.
Starting from E700 and X600, the interface of Samsung mobile phone is modified in a small ways. But for X450 (X458), it returns to the old days. The interface is from the T200 (T208). The list graphic style and designs are all old day things. The most shocking item is the embedded games. Also, the MMS interface is an also disappointed item. It uses back the old design from V200 (V208). Users can only send a photo with texts in one MMS. The design has been improved in the new version like X700 and X600. Samsung X450 (X458) supports back the black and white Nokia Smart Messaging graphics. Together with the same old EMS technology, users can enjoy cheaper SMS download services. X458 does not come with any data cable and IrDA port. Users will find it difficult to install own graphics or ring tones into the handset.
